A venue's website almost always shows the same handful of ground level shots: the front door, the main room, maybe a garden if there is one. What it rarely shows is the thing that actually persuades someone to book, how the whole site fits together, how far the grounds run, what a marquee lawn or a ceremony spot looks like set against its surroundings.

The same applies to an event in progress. A crowd, a market, a show or a festival reads completely differently from above, where scale and layout are visible in a single frame rather than guessed at from a dozen ground level photographs.

This covers both: photographing a venue itself for its own marketing, and covering an event on the day, timed around what is actually happening rather than a fixed slot regardless of the programme.

What a venue's own photography usually misses

Most venue websites are built from photographs taken standing in the room or the garden, because that is what a photographer with a hired hall for an afternoon has time to cover. What gets missed is the thing a couple or an organiser is actually trying to picture: how the whole site works together, whether the ceremony spot has the view it is supposed to have, how far the grounds actually run once you can see them from above.

That single missing image is often the one that gets a venue shortlisted over a competitor with an otherwise identical set of ground level photographs.

Flying near people

Flying over or near a crowd is the part of this work that gets planned hardest, not the part that gets rushed. The A2 Certificate of Competency covers operating closer to uninvolved people than the basic category allows, and every event booking gets a specific plan for where the aircraft will and will not go relative to where people actually are.

Where a particularly dense crowd or an unsuitable layout makes a safe flight impossible, that gets flagged before the booking is confirmed rather than discovered on the day.
